iiTHRU: Purpose

Purpose

Most facilities have had essentially the same drive-thru system being used for many year. Some
companies, such as McDonalds and Dunkin' Donuts are attempting to rewrite this system to create a
more user friendly and more efficient system. The purpose of our IPRO the same. We believe that the
current mobile technology is powerful and will be the future of drive-thru facilities. We also believe
that this same technology will eventually be used in other companies, such as retail or grocery stores.
Through the implementation of a new drive-thru system, we will attempt to improve and update the
current technologies to a more efficient and user friendly level.

Objectives

-To create a more realistic kiosk display
-To modify the mobile application so transactions can occur without Bluetooth
-To create a new database that can be accessed from any computer
-To adjust the purchasing program itself to be more realistic and practical
-To find practical uses for our technology outside of the fast food sphere of influence

Current Issues

The issues our current team is setting out to resolve involve two software based problems and
one construction problem. Previous IPRO's have been working toward the realization of a Bluetooth
based system in which the user in a car would connect via Bluetooth to the restaurants computation
systems and the order would be done via a a mobile application. However, this Bluetooth idea was
never successfully utilized, so previous groups decided to use a QR code to place the orders as the
patron would drive up and then would be scanned at the kiosk. Our team has essentially thrown out the
idea of Bluetooth because of its limited functionality, but have decided to keep the QR code as a back
up system. What we intent to implement is a system done via a mobile application that connects
through the internet and sends the orders to the restaurant as the user is just getting there. We will need
to basically completely redo the mobile application to provide this functionality. Another problem is the
computer program and server meant to be running inside the restaurant. These essentially need to be
redone as well to include the wireless storage and functionality that we desire. Finally, we wanted to
recreate the kiosk and update it to a more modern and practical design. The current one is nice in
person, but would be a bit odd in a car. The new one we will create will be more practical for cars and
for the drive-thru setting.

Implementation of the Solution

Our project is contingent on these groups completing their specific goals. They
are not alone however. With the aid and support of the other groups: Research, Documentation,
Minutes, Extended Activities, Point of Sale, our team will be able to work together towards the final
goal of our project, which is essentially the implementation of a new highly efficient, user friendly, and
mobile experience for the customers of a drive-thru restaurant.
