Objective

  1. Study commercially available class D amplifiers, with a focus on providing two-channel, 10 watt stereo amplification for mobile devices.
  2. Study and provide a comparison of commercially available, conventional Class AB and Class B amplifiers with similar specifications and constraints.
  3. Purchase and investigate a number of evaluation circuit boards, which replicate the functionality of each class of audio amplifier, through graphical and measurement/analysis tools.

Why do we choose to study class D amplifier?

This project targets the customers that use portable electronic devices. IPRO 344 is the first in a series of related IPROs intended to provide a “toolbox” for the design of energy efficient mobile audio devices. This semester’s focus is concentrated on Class-D (AKA “Switching”) amplifiers, which have a theoretical maximum efficiency of 100% and real world efficiency of almost double traditional Class-B or Class-AB. A comparison between Class D and AB is shown below:
