Time-Domain Elements Optimize the Security and Performance of Transformer Protection
Wednesday, March 11, 2020
Ryan McDaniel
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories
About the Topic
Transformers experience magnetizing inrush that creates an operating
current in the transformer differential protection. Early transformer
differential relays had to address the limits of analog
technology. Analog filter circuits could extract the second- and
fourth-harmonic components of the differential current, and these were
used as a surrogate measure for determining if the operating current
was due to inrush. Today, we can design algorithms that distinguish
directly between inrush characteristics and fault current
characteristics. By using the new time-domain algorithms, we can
improve sensitivity and speed of transformer differential
protection. We can also maintain protection security for transformers
built using improved core steels.
About the Speaker
Ryan McDaniel earned his BS in computer engineering from Ohio Northern University in 2002. In 1999, Ryan was hired by American Electric Power (AEP) as a relay technician, where he commissioned protective systems. In 2002, Ryan began working in the Station Projects Engineering group as a protection and control engineer. His responsibilities in this position included protection and control design for substation, distribution, and transmission equipment as well as coordination studies for the AEP system. In 2005, Ryan joined Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. and is currently a senior field application engineer. His responsibilities include providing application support and technical training for protective relay users. Ryan is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois and a member of IEEE.

Reservations
Please make your reservation by noon on Monday 9 Mar 2020 via the
Online Reservation Form.
The social and dinner portions of the meeting have been canceled. We look
forward to welcoming you to the presentation portion of the meeting, assuming
you are feeling well and have not been in contact with anyone who is likely
to have been exposed to coronavirus.
Security Procedure
You must present a government issued photo ID to the ComEd Commercial
Center guard when you arrive. Please allow a few minutes for the
guard to create a custom badge with your photo. ComEd employees and
ComEd contractors may use their ComEd ID badges to enter the building.
Continuing Education
IEEE technical meetings may be acceptable as continuing education where
required for maintenance of professional engineering licensure. Refer to
the individual state's requirements for details. A receipt for one
Professional Development Hour (PDH) will be provided.
