Chicago Chapter 2018-2019

How to Engineer Your Success

Wednesday, June 12, 2019

Alex Flueck

Illinois Tech

About the Topic

What is success? How do YOU define it? How often do you evaluate your personal growth?

If you want to experience more success in your life, then be sure to join us for our first-ever experiment in supporting engineers to be the best they can be.

This meeting will be unlike any previous IEEE PES Chicago Chapter meeting. It's time for us to try something new and exciting. Our summer 2019 experiment will be a hands-on workshop, not a traditional lecture-based presentation. During the workshop, there will be worksheet exercises that everyone will do individually. We also will discuss our findings as we go.

The free workshop will focus on three fundamental ingredients of success:

  1. Setting an intention
  2. Cultivating awareness
  3. Getting unstuck
This will be a fun and insightful evening. We will examine the process of personal transformation. You will leave this workshop with new knowledge and a better understanding of how your mind has taken over your life without your consent.

Don't miss this opportunity to bring more clarity to your life. Invest in your success!

About the Speaker

Dr. Alex Flueck is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. He has been a member of the faculty for 23 years, since receiving his PhD degree from Cornell University in 1996. During that period, he has launched several innovative courses, including (1) an undergraduate hands-on introduction to electrical and computer engineering focused on the design of autonomous robots, (2) a graduate course on the computational algorithms necessary for power grid congestion management, (3) a graduate course on the fundamentals of probability applied to power system reliability, and (4) a graduate short-course on the IEEE standards and applications of synchrophasor technology.

Dr. Flueck has led a variety of research projects, as Principal Investigator, totalling more than $4 million, including (1) Available Transfer Capability of Deregulated Power Systems, (2) IIT Research Experiences for Teachers Site: Corps of Educators and Workshop, (3) Local Area Monitoring System for Microgrid, (4) Faster than Real-Time Dynamics Simulation for Predicting Power System Behavior, (5) A Tool Suite for Improving Reliability and Performance of Combined Transmission-Distribution under High Solar Penetration, and (6) Protection and Dynamic Modeling, Simulation and Analysis of Cascading Failures.

Alex's personal transformation interests include art of learning, courage, creativity, curiosity, emotional intelligence, flow states, habits, inner workings of the brain, interpersonal relationships, leadership, meditation, mindfulness, motivation, philosophy, psychology, self-compassion, stoicism, thinking processes, will power and other non-engineering-related aspects of the human experience.
