HiDry - Providing Sub-Transmission with Dry Type Transformers
Wednesday, March 14, 2018
Kevin Eaton
ABB
About the Topic
Dry type transformers have a common stigma as only being used for providing power in low voltage (600V class) general purpose installations and relegated to indoor usage. However, this is far from the reality of what applications and installations are achievable when utilizing dry type transformers. With the continued product developments in the dry type transformer realm and the continued pressure placed on our infrastructure to be more environmentally sensitive and safer, customers are seeking alternatives to the traditional outdoor liquid filled transformers.
This presentation will cover the different dry type transformer uses and applications and how the product has evolved allowing installations with power ratings in excess of 63MVA and voltage ratings of up to 72.5kV. The presentation will highlight different dry type sub-transmission installation examples from around the world and show how a dry type transformer could potentially save the installation from a total ownership costs perspective in certain applications.
