The Continental Transmission Super Highway and Studying
its Performance

About the Topic
We hear much about the Smart Grid, the Micro Grid and Distributed Generation. They all need interconnections to the regular transmission grid. There is serious investigation underway in Europe and now gaining interest in North America spearheaded by MISO in the US and the Canadian Wind Energy Association in the Canada to overlay the regional transmission grids with a continental transmission super highway. It might span from Florida to Vancouver, Montreal to Southern California. The benefits of a super grid will be discussed along with how it might be physically realized and how a benefit to cost ratio greater than 1 might be achieved. Furthermore, the means of power flow and transient stability study of such a wide system will be proposed.
About the Speaker
Dennis Woodford was Special Studies Engineer in Transmission Planning of Manitoba Hydro where he worked on the Winnipeg - Twin Cities 500 kV interconnection and the Nelson River HVDC project. He is the original developer of the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software, which he started in 1973 while at Manitoba Hydro.
He joined the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre as Executive Director ('86 - '01) and is now President of Electranix Corporation, a consulting company based in Winnipeg.
He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Province of Manitoba and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Manitoba. He is the recipient of the IEEE Power Engineering Society HVDC Uno Lamm Award and a Life Fellow of the IEEE. He is Past-Chairman of the IEEE Subcommittee on HVDC and FACTS, and is active in CIGRE.
