Improved Safety and Reliability in Low Voltage Motor
Control Centers (IEEE P1683)
Wednesday, December 11, 2013
David Tucker
CDM Smith
About the Topic
In recent years arc flash developed into an important topic for the
electrical industry. In response, several years ago IEEE launched the
formation of several standards development working groups on a variety
of arc flash related subjects. These efforts included the Improved
Safety and Reliability in Low Voltage Motor Control Centers P1683
Working Group. P1683 is tasked with the development of document:
"Guide for Motor Control Centers Rated up to and Including 600V AC or
1000 V DC with Recommendations Intended to Help Reduce Electrical
Hazards".
The document, in its near final state, is currently out for
commentary, review, and ballot by IEEE members. This presentation
will provide an overview of the draft P1683 document as well as
overview of the IEEE Standards Association and the standards
development process within IEEE.

international consulting engineering firm, and from their Chicago
design center manages the technical operations of its electrical
engineering practice. He has 21 years of experience in the design and
execution of electrical power systems on a variety of public
infrastructure projects in the US and in select international
locations.
He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University.
He is a certified energy manager (CEM) and is a registered professional
engineer in 5 states (Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio,
Wisconsin). Lastly he is a member of IEEE Improved Safety and
Reliability in Low Voltage Motor Control Centers P1683 Working Group.
