Smart Grid Initiatives in Naperville and Oak Park

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Mark Curran and K.C. Poulos

Naperville and Oak Park

About the Topic

Two leading Smart Grid initiatives will be presented: Naperville and Oak Park.

The Naperville Smart Grid Initiative (NSGI) is an investment in Naperville's city-owned utility that will modernize the electric grid using the latest digital technology to increase reliability, reduce operating costs, improve efficiency and reduce waste for customers. The electric utility is an asset valued at $356 million, and like all major assets, must be maintained and improved to ensure customers receive the best service and value.

The NSGI is a $22 million project funded partly by a federal matching grant. This $11 million grant was distributed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The city provided the remaining $11 million through its capital improvements fund. No general fund (property tax) dollars are being used for the NSGI. Rather, the city is using the Department of Public Utilities-Electric's enterprise fund, which is funded by utility customers when they pay their utility bills.

The Naperville Smart Grid Initiative includes installation of more than 57,000 smart meters in every home and business in the city along with automation and upgrade of the electric grid backbone.

For Oak Park's smart grid initiative, you will hear from K.C. Poulos about Oak Park's experience in ComEd's AMI program, ComEd's designation of Oak Park as a testbed for smart grid technology, the new solar panel system, and the evolution of the municipality's role in community energy planning and consumption.
