About the Topic
Weldy/Lamont is extending 11 and 33 kV electric lines to around a
million people in over 2000 rural communities. This presentation will
provide an overview of Ghana's rural electrification program and
progress. It will provide examples of the country's existing
infrastructure as well as changes introduced by W/L to improve system
reliability. Local construction techniques and work practices will
also be presented.
About the Speaker
Thomas Callsen is a Project Engineer for Weldy/Lamont Associates -
responsible for a rural electrification project in West Africa. Prior
to joining W/L in 2010, Thomas spent 25 years at ComEd, most recently
as a Standards Engineer where he was responsible for the materials,
applications, and construction standards related to distribution
transformers, capacitors, fuses, and reclosers.
Thomas has received three industry "Project of the Year" awards.
- In March 2012 Thomas and W/L received the African Energy Award for
the "Most Inventive Rural Electrification Project" on the continent of
Africa.
- In 2008 for a "Real-time Fault Indication Project" that resulted
in a commercially available product.
- In 2005 for the "DC in a Box" substation that is now the
"substation of choice" for ComEd with over 35 installed on their
system.
Thomas has a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University
of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, is a member of IEEE Transformer Committee,
and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.

The cost of the optional family style dinner is $15 for IEEE members,
$20 for non-members, payable at the event. Sorry, we are unable to

Continuing Education
IEEE technical meetings may be acceptable as continuing education where
required for maintenance of professional engineering licensure. Refer to
the individual state's requirements for details. A receipt for one
Professional Development Hour (PDH) will be provided.
