Larry Coyle
Exelon Generation
About the Topic
On March 11, 2011, a tragic and powerful earthquake and tsunami stuck
the northeast portion of Japan near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Plant. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant consists of six Boiling
Water Reactors (BWR) with a total capacity of 4.7 GW. These events
resulted in disrupting all power sources for the Fukushima Plant,
resulting in the most severe accident at a nuclear plant since the
1986 Chernobyl accident. A detailed description of this event will be
presented, along with a discussion of the safeguards installed at US
nuclear plants.
About the Speaker
The presenter will be Larry Coyle. Larry is Vice President Operations
for Exelon Generation. Larry has been in the nuclear industry for 29
years and has held leadership positions in operations, maintenance,
and work management at the Dresden, LaSalle, and Braidwood generating
stations. Larry has a BS in nuclear engineering from the University
of Illinois and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Exelon is the
owner and operator of 10 nuclear power plants consisting of 17 nuclear
reactors located in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Exelon's
nuclear plants generate about 20% of the total nuclear capacity in the
United States.
