Transmission Line Sag Remediation Projects
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Tom Byrne and Gene O'Donnell
ComEd
About the Topic
In October 2010, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation
(NERC) issued an Industry Alert stating that it had become aware of
discrepancies between the design and actual field conditions of
transmission facilities, including transmission conductors. These
discrepancies could be both significant and widespread, with the
potential to result in discrepancies in line ratings. NERC directed
utilities to assess the as-built conditions of their lines and take
actions accordingly within a specified timeline. ComEd has begun a
significant undertaking to review, address and remediate all 326 lines
on the system. Raising transmission towers is a fix for many of the
issues found on the system because it is a permanent fix for rating
and clearance issues that does not involve adding splices into the
line.
