Rejuvenation of Aged Underground Cables
Wednesday, May 11, 2011
Rich Brinton
Novinium
About the Topic
Over two billion feet of pre-1985-vintage underground distribution
cable is still in service in North America. At a typical cost of
$33/ft to replace, the industry would need to spend about $66B to
replace it all. This presentation will provide answers to the
following questions:
- How did we get into this predicament?
- What options are available to deal with this aging
infrastructure?
The presentation will explore the root causes of reliability problems.
The physics and chemistry of the problems and the solutions will be
revealed and some myths laid bare. The 3 Rs (Rehabilitation,
Rejuvenation, and Replacement) and 3 Ds (Diagnostics, Distribution
Hierarchy of Needs, and Database of failure statistics) will be
placed in an appropriate strategic context to provide a path to a
reliability solution at a fraction of the $66B capital cost
required for wholesale cable replacement.
About the Speaker
Rich Brinton has been involved in Cable Rejuvenation since 1991, when
he negotiated a license for the first rejuvenation process and fluid
from Dow Corning.
He graduated from Penn State with honors with the following degrees:
BS in Industrial Engineering, BA in Liberal Arts.
He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Ohio and a Senior Member
of the IEEE. He regularly attends the Insulated Conductor Committee
meetings of the IEEE/PES.
