The impact of this new code revision to owners and operators of critical infrastructure may be significant. While the NEC is clear on the design requirements for critical power distribution systems, it does not clearly define the Designated Critical Operations Areas (DCOA) that require compliance with this article.
Currently, the NEC leaves the designation of a DCOA to the Authority Having Jurisdiction for the facility. Providing reliable electrical systems has always been a priority for critical facilities, and with the introduction of NEC Article 708, voluntary compliance may become a thing of the past.
Since joining CDM in 1982, Mr. Plansky has designed electrical systems for public, private and municipal facilities throughout the United States and overseas. Many of these projects included critical facilities that required highly reliable electrical systems with multiple utility sources and onsite power generation systems.
Brenda Fierro is currently employed by CDM as an Electrical Engineer. Ms. Fierro graduated in 2006 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer and a LEED Accredited Professional.
Ms. Fierro is experienced in designing standby power facilities, as well as electrical, instrumentation and security systems for water and wastewater treatment and other public facilities.
