IEEE C37.2 - Standard Electrical Power System Device Function
Numbers, Acronyms and Contact Designations
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Kevin Donahoe
GE Energy
About the Topic
IEEE C37.2 "Standard Electrical Power System Device Function Numbers,
Acronyms and Contact Designations" was first published in 1928 as AIEE
No. 26 and just may be the oldest IEEE standard in regular use. So
the challenge was how to take a standard with 80 years of history and
continue bringing it up to date. This presentation will tell the
story behind what the PES President referred to as a "profound
revision". It will highlight the changes in the standard that address
the wider role of data communication devices in today's electrical
power systems. It also tells the story behind getting to this
revision including how a NYC Subway System engineer helped save 7
function numbers from being retired too early.
About the Speaker
Kevin Donahoe has spent the last 28 years working in the electric
utility industry. The last 25 of those years have been spent testing,
installing, trouble shooting, specifying, setting, estimating,
designing, reviewing, documenting, and setting standards for
protection and control systems. Mr. Donahoe spent 20 years with
Commonwealth Edison, an Exelon company, before moving to GE Energy.
Though the majority of Mr. Donahoe's experience has been with
transmission and distribution substations he has significant
experience with generation protection and distribution protection with
specific experience with interconnection requirements. Mr. Donahoe is
a senior member of the IEEE active in the Power System Relaying
Committee and the Standards Advisory.
