Natural Gas Engine Generators

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Vic Ranalletta

Burns & McDonnell

About the Topic

The introduction of large amounts of renewable energy in regional transmission organizations has developed a need to augment the variable power produced by the renewable energy sources with quick-starting generation to pick up load when the renewable sources' power output declines. Natural gas fired engine generators are a proven source of this rapidly dispatchable generation.

The presentation will discuss the impacts of renewable energy sources on the transmission systems and how gas-fired engine generators solve these difficulties for both power plant owners and transmission system operators. Case studies will be reviewed from project motivation through design, construction, and successful operation.

About the Speaker

Vic Ranalletta has spent the last 32 years working in the electric utility industry, both in the role as consultant and owner. Mr. Ranalletta spent 2 years with Brown & Root, 13 years with Fluor Daniel, and 13 years with a power plant developer before moving to Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company as Manager of the Energy Global Practice in the Chicago Regional Office. During the last 4 years, Mr. Ranalletta has managed four gas fired reciprocating engine power projects.

Mr. Ranalletta's experience as a developer and an engineering consultant has played a key role in assisting power plant owners in the development, permitting, gas interconnection, electrical interconnection, and conceptual and final designs of the engine power plants. Mr. Ranalletta is a senior member of ASME and is a licensed professional engineer in five states. Mr. Ranalletta has BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering, and a MBA.
