Chicago Chapter 2008-2009

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Sadia Sadiq

S&C Electric

About the Topic

This presentation addresses the specific challenges that face the transportation industry as a whole and describes hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technologies. It then studies PHEV technology as related to school buses, and briefly describes a performance analysis of a single test school bus from a nationwide plug-in hybrid school bus project. It then describes vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology and smart grid application. The overall objective of the presentation is to gain a better understanding of how a PHEV vehicle, in particular a school bus, may perform in real-world conditions, where the vehicle can be optimized to yield improved fuel economy and overall performance, and to draw future plans including V2G technology to show why plug-in hybrids are an excellent solution for the transportation sector.
