Chicago Chapter 2008-2009

Tommy Mayne has arrived in Chicago. His "cajun" style is intact, so be prepared for some comments about our weather. The National Weather Service says that the snow system has moved out, so join us for a special (and free) cajun feast. Don't miss Tommy tonight!

Hurricane Katrina - the Ultimate Lesson in Electrical Restoration (and Gustav too)

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Tommy Mayne

IEEE PES North America T&D Director

About the Topic

Hurricane Katrina was the worst storm in terms of devastation of any natural catastrophe in U.S. history. The impact of the storm was spread over Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. Over 4 million electrical customers were affected. The utility industry launched what was to be the largest and most far reaching restoration effort ever in the history of the industry.

This talk will walk through a time line of the storm, including pre-storm planning and activities, what occurred during the duration of the storm, and post-Katrina restoration. What went wrong, what went right and what can be done better. The concerns raised in this talk will have you asking, "What if something of this magnitude happened here?"

About the Speaker

Tommy Mayne, is a registered professional electrical engineer in the State of Louisiana with 35-plus years of experience in the Utility Industry. He has worked in every aspect of electrical restoration efforts from planning to execution. He has worked restoration effects in ice storms, tornadoes, and every major hurricane to hit the Louisiana/Mississippi gulf coast since Camille in 1969. He has also been a part of several mutual assistance traveling teams for storms outside of Louisiana, including hurricanes Hugo and Andrew.

Having personally "lived" this storm, Tommy brings a unique perspective not only to the story of restoration but to the experience of such a devastating catastrophe. He brings his "Cajun" style of presentation that will not only be informative but entertaining as well.
