The West Loop project represents perhaps the most far-reaching, expensive and complicated project ever undertaken by ComEd.
Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the nation. Its downtown area, the business district, is a high-density load area that presents a challenge when it comes to electric power supply. The northern part of the business district is a fast growing area that shows a capacity deficit beginning in 2008 due to lack of a source substation.
The West Loop project will install a 345kV substation on Goose Island in the northern part of the Chicago business district together with a 345kV ring bus at Crawford station. The transmission network proposed under this project will improve reliability of the existing transmission system in the City of Chicago. The increased transmission system capacity will serve Chicago's homes and businesses for many years to come.
Zafar Choudhry is a Senior Engineer at Exelon Corporation where he is responsible for transmission system studies and planning for the Chicago region. He previously worked for MAIN Inc. where he was involved in evaluation of available transmission capacity to help trading transmission service in the eastern interconnection. He has authored two papers on deregulated energy markets that were presented in the American Power Conference in 1999 and 2002.
His areas of expertise include optimal transmission expansion plans, risks and opportunities in deregulated energy markets and transmission reliability. He holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering and Master degree in Business Administration. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Illinois and Michigan.
