Overview of the ComEd Operations Management System

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Mark Baranek

ComEd/Exelon

About the Topic

This presentation will describe the computer application used at ComEd to manage operation of the distribution system.

While monitoring of the distribution system via remote telemetry has increased dramatically over the past decade, there is still a significant reliance on customer calls to pinpoint the location of outages and failures on the distribution system. A new Operations Management System (OMS) installed at ComEd uses system topology information to automate the review of customer calls to more quickly identify outages and their causes. This OMS system contains a full model of over 5000 distribution circuits on the ComEd system, down to the transformer that serves the customer. It has many significant features that allow dispatchers to more efficiently perform daily operations on the distribution network.

About the Speaker

Mark Baranek is a Manger at ComEd where he has recently completed the implementation of a large technology project for a new Operations Management System.

He has over 20 years of experience in engineering, operation and management of electric power delivery systems. Mark holds MS and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He is a licensed P.E. in the State of Illinois and resides with his family in Chicago.
