As the electric utility industry around the world lumbers toward a new, restructured environment, the strategies for success need to change from those that worked in the past. Unfortunately, the restructuring imposes different effects on the various segments of the industry but, too commonly, the same strategies are employed for multiple segments. The media have been reporting on the impacts on the generation and transmission segments and the trickle-down effect on power users, especially in California. This talk will examine the impact that the restructuring is having on distribution systems and the implications those changes have for power users. The talk will also provide a brief update on the Power Engineering Society, its organization, finances and plans.
